It’s that time of year again where you look back over the last year and either 1) wish you were more organized and dread going through things, or 2) are thankful you took the time to file things away. Either way, make a commitment to a file system that works for you and stick with it in 2019. It’s not too late. For many documents that you need to keep for 10 years, you could shred 2008 this year. Here are a few more of our tips for 2019:
- Keep notes on donated items, including item description and approximate value
- Obtain receipts for donations and talk to your tax adviser to make sure you aren’t missing anything
- Organize your files and receipts to help you locate what you need, so you can find all the deductions you’re entitled to.
- Don’t shred anything before you check to find out how long you need to keep it. Documents vary on length of time you need to keep them, so check with your tax adviser, employer, attorney, etc.
It’s never too early to start a better system for keeping 2019 records and papers more organized. If you need help with a filing system or organizing your home office, give us a call.
