Office supply as well as Target and your Marts have price wars on paper goods, pens, pencils, crayons, etc.  to stir up the back to school shopping instinct.  Stock up now on these items.  Buy enough to last all year and stash away for that little something for a child’s birthday gift or for those Operation Christmas Child boxes.

Back to school can quickly drain the family budget, particularly those with multiple children.  As the kids get older their preferences and tastes come into play and often times a plain, wire bound notebook doesn’t do the trick anymore…….it’s a fancy, sparkly, glitter coated one, often putting the price tag even higher.

In most cases, the first day of school still feels like summer.  My suggestion is to  wear their favorite summer outfits.  The kids will be more comfortable than being overdressed in a new, stiff outfit!

A few weeks into the school year, head out to pick up some new outfits.  By then, there may be some sales plus they will know by then what’s “cool”, or at least they will have a good idea and you’re not going to be stuck with those jeans that “nobody else is wearing”!

As I c lean and organize for my clients, I often see the zones that they have.  The most important thing is to work in zones and have items at the point of first or last use.  It’s also important to locate items based on frequency of use.

Zones:  Everything used to do a set of tasks should be grouped together.  Every home is different so some will have few zones and others will have many.

Food storage:  pantry and refrigerator

Food Prep:   knives, cutting boards, strainer usually close to the sink

Wrapping and packing:  Tupperware, cling wrap, lunch bags, ziplocs

Baking:  Measuring tools, pans, flour, sugar, rolling pin

Clean Up:  Cleaning supplies and tools

There are many other options, but I think you get the picture.  Work smarter…not harder!

I have a regular client that I clean for once a week.  She usually makes a list of jobs in order of priority………..it usually contains the following: 

bathrooms

dust and vac bedrooms

kitchen

great room

hallway and entry

etc. etc.

Today the list had a different twist.  At the bottom it said, “If time allows, please freshen up the bouquet of flowers from the garden.”  There was a glass vase with wilted flowers sitting on the kitchen counter.  I couldn’t wait to cross everything off my list so I could go out to the garden!  Not only did I have the opportunity to walk in her flower garden, but she gave me the option of picking what I wanted to cheer up her family’s kitchen!  You never know what you might find at the end of your list—be sure to read to the bottom!

Don’t overload your washer.  This causes extra wear on the machine and clothes don’t get clean.

Use less detergent.  Using too much makes it harder to rinse out of clothes.  Better to use not enough than too much…..

Clean the lint filter.  A dirty lint filter can result in a 30% increase in drying costs.

Save energy with back to back loads in the dryer.
